Microplastics in Kuwait’s Wastewater Streams

چکیده
The wastewater stream is the most significant contributor of microplastics (MPs) to environment. There are five treatment plants (WWTPs) in Kuwait. This baseline study provides an overview MP removal three major WWTPs Kuwait that treat some 81.31% produced. Sulabiya WWTP was efficient removal, followed by Kabd and Umm Al-Haiman WWTPs. efficiency very high for with average 2.5 L−1 treated effluent comparable Australia, United States, Europe. standard methodology sample collection, preparation, identification using microscopic examination micro-Raman spectrometry followed. Over 94.5 billion MPs enter daily; 92.3 retained sludge, while 2.2 passed into environment due use effluent. influent, effluent, sludge inventories ranged between 119 230 L−1, 1 12 72 103 10 g−1 respectively. fiber dominant shape, white, transparent, black were prevalent colors. Currently, not used any terrestrial or agricultural application; however, routinely many countries as a soil additive farms. Using water irrigation leads dissemination It necessary assess how far these move profile if they can contaminate shallow aquifers. observation retention empirical, matrixes agriculture likely raise issue food safety.

A review of microplastics measuring methods in water and wastewater bodies
Background and Objective: Recently, microplastics (MPs) have been found in the aquatic and terrestrial environments, air, and food. Other pollutants can be transported by MPs and pose a threat to the human, animal, and environment. Measurement and evaluation of microplastics can either increase knowledge about them or boost understanding of their possible harmful effects. However, no standard m...
متن کاملMultivariate analysis and chemometric characterisation of textile wastewater streams.
The aim of this work was to design a quick and reliable method for the evaluation and classification of wastewater streams into treatable and non-treatable effluents for reuse/recycling. Different chemometric methods were used for this purpose handling the enormous amount of data, and additionally to find any hidden information, which would increase our knowledge and improve the classification....
متن کاملMicroplastics in the marine environment.
This review discusses the mechanisms of generation and potential impacts of microplastics in the ocean environment. Weathering degradation of plastics on the beaches results in their surface embrittlement and microcracking, yielding microparticles that are carried into water by wind or wave action. Unlike inorganic fines present in sea water, microplastics concentrate persistent organic polluta...
متن کاملMicroplastics in the Persian Gulf
Background: Microplastics, as emerging and persistent pollutants, are ubiquitous in different environmental compartments and could be considered an ecological threat to wildlife and humans. Materials and Methods: In the present review article, the existing studies on the presence of microplastics in water, sediments, and aquatic organisms of the Persian Gulf were reviewed with regard to differe...
متن کاملIn a nutshell: Microplastics and fisheries
Information of the ecological consequences of microplastic pollution is nascent; however, there is increasing evidence of direct and indirect effects associated with the ingestion by organisms and the toxic responses from inherent contaminants leaching from the microplastics and from extraneous pollutants that adhere to them (Cole et al. 2011; Teuten et al. 2009). The size of microplastics is e...
